“It\u2019s a lot more private here at Carleton than it\u2019s\u2014I don\u2019t know if private is the right\u00a0word, personal. It\u2019s a lot more having to motivate myself because there isn\u2019t a Masjid\u00a0in town. I was really lucky about was I had a fantastic, very, very open and very\u2014the\u00a0most loving girl as my roommate and I explained to her at the beginning of the year:\u00a0\u201cUm, so I\u2019m going to pray in here.\u201d I figured out the direction and all that sort of stuff\u00a0and I was like \u201chere\u2019s what\u2019s going to go down basically, um, five times a day I am\u00a0going to be in here and I am going to facing that wall and I\u2019m going to be praying.\u201d I\u00a0told her if you ever, ever have any questions about it, please please please ask me;\u00a0and she did ask me. It was a lot more, it was really easy\u2014she made it a lot easier for\u00a0me to lay down what I needed rather of just being like BAM, this is what I need from\u00a0you when I\u2019m praying. She asked me, \u201cWell is there anything I should do, should I not\u00a0talk? Should I not play music?\u201d And I was like, Yes! That\u2019s exactly what you should do,\u00a0thank you so much for bringing it up for me. The first few times were a little\u00a0awkward because she tried to talk to me not realizing I was praying, but she was so\u00a0sweet about it.<\/p>\n

I personally cannot see a life where I do not involve my family, and if my family is\u00a0going to be an important part of my life there is just some things I know that my dad\u00a0won\u2019t accept, some things I know that my mom won\u2019t be comfortable with and like\u00a0barring, like I don\u2019t want to be cut off from them over silly things like this. So it was\u00a0important, that\u2019s why it was important for me I guess, to come up with ways that we\u00a0could both kind of win because I wasn\u2019t going to be happy sitting at home all the\u00a0time and they weren\u2019t going to be happy having me out all the time. So I mean, I\u2019m\u00a0sure it\u2019s what every family really has to do, like compromise on curfews and like\u00a0allowances and stuff like that. But first generation I think there is just that added\u00a0layer of\u2014it\u2019s like not only what your parents want you to do, but the fact that their\u00a0expectations are just so different from the very beginning.<\/p>\n

I think, I guess advice for Muslim youth today would really be… to make your\u00a0Muslim identity part of who you are, and not something separate that you have to\u00a0keep referring back to. It\u2019s very important for\u2014I think especially in your teenage\u00a0years, where your identity is something you\u2019re always questioning. To be very\u00a0deliberate about making your religion part of your identity and not aside of yourself,\u00a0and not something separate from who you are.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
