“Again because I come from an interfaith background that\u2019s really where my\u00a0interests lie and also where I feel I can be most helpful to the community at large. I\u00a0know how the dominant culture thinks. I have an understanding of what the fears\u00a0are. And I think it\u2019s important that others see the Muslim community as people and\u00a0that we\u2019re a very diverse community. And so we not only come from other countries,\u00a0but we also are home-grown as well. And this is where I feel I can help, you know,\u00a0educate people. And that\u2019s really what it\u2019s about – I think is helping others to see that\u00a0we are just people like everybody else and, you know, we\u2019re from here, we\u2019re from\u00a0different cultural backgrounds, even from here. And so this is how, this my story of\u00a0how I came into the community.”<\/p>\n

Amin:<\/strong><\/p>\n

“I see a lot of similarities coming from a Japanese background and knowing the\u00a0history of what happened after World War II with, with racial biasing of, towards\u00a0Japanese Americans and then I understand after 9\/11 the sudden reinvigoration of\u00a0cultural differences and particularly now the media perhaps harping on it. But, I do\u00a0understand the quandary that many of our, of our Muslim brothers and sisters have,\u00a0especially coming from my, my background and being Japanese American and\u00a0knowing what my parents and grandparents went through. I feel very deeply that,\u00a0how unjust it is and on the same token I understand where it comes from. I don\u2019t\u00a0condone it, but I understand where it comes from.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
