“My family comes from Lebanon, and it\u2019s an all-Islamic heritage. My dad came in\u00a0probably the mid\u2014I think it was 1913\u2014with his dad and his uncle. My dad sold\u00a0merchandise with a horse and buggy, and then later a car. That\u2019s how he made his\u00a0living. And my grandpa Hagar, my mom\u2019s dad, came about 1903.<\/p>\n

In the travels between 1961 and \u201968, I had met the founders of the Muslim Students\u00a0Association at one of the conventions I attended and became a member in 1963.\u00a0And, you know, I thought, oh, I\u2019m a joiner, I\u2019ll join this club. And not even thinking I\u2019d\u00a0find members at the University of Minnesota. And the only reason I found members\u00a0was to read the Minnesota Daily and find that they are having an event. And I told\u00a0my mother about it and we lived 350 miles from the University of Minnesota, so I\u00a0said, \u201cMother, do you want to come down on the train and come to this event and\u00a0stay with me at Bailey Hall at the University?\u201d And she said \u201cSure.\u201d So she came\u00a0down and we went to this event and we met some of the Muslim students. It wasn\u2019t\u00a0until 1968 I decided, really, this is it, you know, I want to be a full-time student at\u00a0the University. So that\u2019s when we moved here, 1968.<\/p>\n

We founded a Sunday school on the campus of the University of Minnesota for\u00a0Muslim kids and we founded Women\u2019s Society shortly thereafter\u2014and all of these\u00a0things still exist. And I was communications director for three terms and my mother\u00a0was a Women\u2019s Society president.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
