“When I think back to the civil rights struggle and how we were treated and\u00a0stereotyped and we\u2019re still going through this to a certain extent; but how now post\u00a09\/11, a lot of attention has been diverted from us towards Muslims. It\u2019s unfortunate\u00a0that we as a country did not learn our lesson from our past and how we as a country\u00a0have treated people in the past based on perceptions and stereotyping and\u00a0innuendos and just painting everyone of a certain faith, in this case Islam, with the\u00a0same stroke of the brush.<\/p>\n

I think if people would just take time to seek out folks that are of the faith, many\u00a0times they work with individuals that are Muslims and don\u2019t even realize it and have\u00a0a good opinion about them.<\/p>\n

I go to Masjid an-Nur in North Minneapolis. And many of us have been together\u00a0including Sister Anisah since the 70\u2019s. Unlike when we started out it was all black,\u00a0now when you walk in our masjid it looks like the United Nations. I mean that\u2019s the\u00a0other beautiful thing about Islam and I\u2019m not saying this to down any other religion\u00a0or anything, but there used to be a saying in America and it\u2019s still true today that the\u00a0most segregated hour is Sunday. I travel a lot and it\u2019s just a wonderful feeling to go\u00a0anywhere in the world where there is a masjid and to feel welcome and love and\u00a0respected.”<\/p>\n

“The up and coming Muslims? Well, just be hardworking and take care of your own\u00a0business and treat people with respect; and that\u2019s all you have to do.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
