Photo contest winners

The Islamic Resource Group (IRG), in partnership with Muslim Student Associations (MSA), organized a photo contest to capture smiling snapshots of students and community members. The photographs were based on the theme, “Got Smile? Share it!” that represented a common value that is cherished by Muslims and the society at large. All photos were judged by a panel of three independent judges on the impact, composition and storytelling effect of the photos.

IRG’s partnership with the MSA’s on this project generated a great deal of enthusiasm. About a dozen MSAs participated in this project and 40 entries were submitted.

IRG is pleased to announce the winners of this competition. First place winner will receive $250 and the two runners-up will receive $100 each. The MSAs of the three winning entries will receive $300 each. Congratulations to all the winners!

Practicing to be a bigger sister (and future doctor)

Practicing to be a bigger sister (and future doctor)

I captured this touching image of Naomy and her daughter during a family and maternity photo session with the Abdurahman family. We took the photos at the family’s home in Blaine, MN, to give the images a more intimate feeling. The little girl was so excited to use her stethoscope to hear the heartbeats of her new twin baby sisters, and I was very lucky to capture Naomy’s beaming smile as she looked down on her daughter.

Smile out loud, it’s contagious!

3D Smile

Right after the morning prayers of Eid-Al-Adha celebration this year I wanted to take a family photo. Before everyone goes off their separate ways, I told my younger sister lets gather family at the parking lot of the masque. We prayed at the Islamic Institute of Minnesota in Burnsville masjid. My sisters said “that would be embarrassing” and stood there with her arms folded as you see in the picture. I honestly do not remember what I said next but my sister turned slightly and starting laughing out load and that’s what this picture represents.

The Prophet Muhammad [PBUH] said: “Do not abuse anyone, do not look down upon any good work, and when you speak to your brother, show him a cheerful face.” [Sunan of Abu-Dawood, Hadith 1889]

Keep Smiling

At a local community event the kids were running around and playing, out of no where the weather turned gloomy. As you can see that did not stop the kids from enjoying, they went back into the shelter, wore some more layers and went back out and enjoyed the rest of the day. You can tell by the rain water on the kids face and his smile how much fun they were having.
